Massac Unit 1 is joining communities across the country in observing November as National Homeless Youth Awareness Month. Throughout the month, please help us raise awareness of youth homelessness and remind families of the rights and supports available to students who lack stable housing.
Youth homelessness is often hidden. Many students are not living on the street. They may be staying with relatives or friends after losing their home, living in a motel or shelter, or moving from place to place. These students face real barriers to attending school, completing homework, and feeling secure, yet many families do not know that help is available.
Each of our schools works with the district’s homeless liaison to identify students in need and connect them with support. Our job is to make sure no child falls through the cracks because of a housing crisis. If your family is going through a hard time, please reach out. We are here to help, and that help is confidential.
Families who have lost housing or are sharing housing due to economic hardship are encouraged to contact the district homeless liaison, Thomas Walker, at (347) 762-7722 or twalker@massac.org, or speak with any school principal, counselor, or social worker.
Unit 1 invites everyone to wear purple on Wednesday, November 4th in support of this cause.
