Massac County High School is a comprehensive four-year public high school with an enrollment that ranges from 600-700 students in grades 9-12.  The school opened in the fall of 1981 and graduated its first senior class in the spring of 1982.  Massac County High School  is accredited by the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and holds membership in the College Board


The academic program is organized in a seven period schedule. Students may earn up to 3.5 credits per semester.  Students are enrolled in seven classes that are approximately 50 minutes in length. 9th and 10th grade students attend 3 classes, have a 30 minute lunch period, and then attend the remaining four classes. 11th and 12th grade students attend 4 classes, have a 30 minute lunch period, and then attend the remaining three classes.  AP® courses are currently offered in Biology, Chemistry, and English Language.  Additional AP® courses will be offered in Calculus AB and  U.S. History during the 2011/2012 academic year.  AP is an open-enrollment program.

Graduation Requirements and Credits
2008/2009 Freshmen and all classes thereafter will be required to earn 24 credits to graduate (This requirement was previously set at 21).  The credit break-down for these students is:
  • English - 4 credits 
  • Math - 3 credits 
  • Science - 3 credits 
  • U.S. History - 1 credit 
  • U.S. Government - 1 credit 
  • P.E. - 3 1/2 credits 
  • Health - 1/2 credit 
  • Driver Ed. - 1/4 credit 
  • Elective Courses for remaining credits 

Students in the 2011 graduating class and each class thereafter will receive weighted GPA points for select courses if they choose to take the AP Exam.  Classes are not weighted for those students that do not take the exam. The following courses will be weighted on a 5.0 grading scale for the 2011 graduating class (An “A” = 5.0, “B” = 4.0, “C” = 3.0, “D” = 2.0):

  • AP US History 
  • AP Language/Composition
  • AP Literature

Honor graduates for the class of 2011 and after will consist of the top 10% based on their cumulative GPA.

GPA is computed using the above quality points. Beginning with grade 9, all subjects, whether passed or failed, are included in the computation.  Grades are recorded on the transcript and grade point average is computed in January and May.
